I tend to write little pen sketches first, then if I decide I like the piece, or at least don't detest the piece, then I might start trying to add some music to it.

Most often, rejection slips are business decisions, not artistic decisions.
100% correct, I've seen some fantastic work rejected, and some absolute dross accepted, so I would implore anyone who is rejected to try and not take it to heart.
