cicadas' buzz
the first reminder that
the days grow short

acorns, dead frogs,
deer shit... you'd think
I never fed this dog

at long long last
here
at the farm stand
in cardboard boxes
atop the rough wooden bench...
TOMATOES
real tomatoes
grown under sun
and rain
blemished
flecked with the soil
from which they sprang
FRESH TOMATOES
at last!
and yellow squash
and one early bell pepper
oh yes
summer is finally here!

what can one say
at a time like this?
how can mere words
salve such savage wound?
at least I won't begin
by saying "at least..."
only this:
it will heal
someday
I don't know when
