Day of Peace

Post by firsty » November 2nd, 2007, 12:03 pm

hey all. i know it's been a while but i'm still here. pel is doing great, the kids are doing great (one was darth vader and one was a meerkat for halloween) and even tho i havent been doing too much writing lately, i'm still breathin.

late last week an idea struck me, and i think it's going to be very big, but i need your help.

the idea is: A Day of Peace.

by gathering as much popular support as possible (so far i have a group on facebook and a group from newsvine), we would like to have the entire, global internet community assemble in one voice to promote Peace.

the concept is: asking all personal and commercial websites to revise their websites so that they display a personalized peace logo or some variation of a message of Peace which fits their organization, group, blog, or effort.

the event is scheduled as a tribute to the late John Lennon and will run from december 7 (friday) to december 10 (monday), 2007.

the hope is that small and personal blogs will begin the assembly/demonstration on friday, garnering attention, and then december 10 is the one day that we will ask ALL commercial websites to cease activity for one day in order to promote Peace.

this is a sacrifice. but that is the point. there is a growing grassroots peace effort, exemplified by last saturday's peace marches in several cities. but we are facing a cynical population who doubts that people are ready to sacrifice something. but in this complex world, it can be understandably difficult to join in a movement that isnt being broadcast by the MSM.

and many of the critics of popular movements today cite the internet as one of the problems, but this Day of Peace hopes to change that.

we are asking our governments to abandon their profit-driven policies of war. this is a huge sacrifice on their part. by demonstrating that people of all kinds can assemble in one effort, sacrificing one day's commerce, for the name of Peace, we can show that this world is, with a vast majority, interested in doing what they need to do to promote Peace.

different sites will handle this action differently. while it will be groundbreaking to, for instance, go to ebay and see a giant peace sign and no links to auctions, it will also be important for the web population to have places to congregate, discuss, share experiences, be creative, etc. so forums like this are key to the success of the action.

please check out our various landing spots for planning. i am building a group of organizing members, we need to be able to create graphics (all just variations of the Peace Logo), spread the word, write articles, generate exciting content, connect potential participants, etc. the bigger our organizing groups become, the more influence we will have.

our website is (temporarily): http://seanmh.googlepages.com/dayofpeace

our discussion group is: http://groups.google.com/group/dayofpeace

our facebook group (open to all) is here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=5616094189 (it's only a few minutes old, so dont be put off by the lack of members)

personally, i would love if studio8 could be one of the major hubs of this event. we havent achieved anything yet. this is all just a dream. but i really believe that this might present the kind of access and challenge that can produce perhaps the biggest single Peace assembly in history.

thanks for reading and i really am excited about this! lets roll, as they say.
and knowing i'm so eager to fight cant make letting me in any easier.

I just joined the google group. Sorry it took me so long! I think this is a great idea but I'm trying to understand what we can do at Studio Eight to participate. I'll read this post again a couple of times and join in on the google discussions when I can!
