As Is

love is like the federal budget
it's a foot thick and there is no
line-item veto. It's the whole package
or nothing.

There is no mix and match in love
not a chinese menu two from column A
one from column B
it's the blue plate special
what you get is what you see

no a la cart before
the horse of a different color buffet
build-your-own potato head salad
Grecian chin and Roman nose
as if we chose the eyes
our lover uses to see
us

no pick and choose or
ad hoc interior decorating
the property is sold as is
don't think of it as a fixer upper

I haven't read any of your writing for awhile---my fault. This is so good---it reminds me of all I have been missing. Excellent poem.

however...

the idea of "as is," while beautifully simple and true, ahould not be construed as a catch-all excuse for any particular flavor of perpetual, perpetrated bullshit either. just sayin'.

it's a bad idea trying to mold people into your image, and well, it's a setup for failure at best.....we all seem to learn this the hard way, by fucking up a lot of potentially rewarding relationships with our insistence on this and that....somewhere we need to strike a balance between live and let live, and being taken advantage of......a most tricky balance for sure......many good lines, clay
