one by one,
the balls slide into the pockets
each shot setting up the next
always an avenue, always an angle
how many banks does it take?
how much english applied?
spins and counter spins -
powder for the friction
the cue grinds into blue chalk
until only a hole remains

I even heard the click of the impact between the balls
the thump of the bank shots on the rails

Fairmont and Collington
there used to be a synagogue
last time I visited baltimore
I noticed it had been converted to a pool hall
I did not go inside but I imagined the ambience must have been cool.
So many of those old east baltimore shuls had been converted to churches
it was nice to see one put to good use.

highlandtown/fells point/greektown - i grew up in southeast balto. lived there for 40 yrs. i know exactly where you mean.

"English" has always been one of my favorite terms.
In pool, it means to apply spin to the ball.
What better tool to create spin than English?
We use language to impart spin, and what better language than English?
Eight ball in the side.

(doreen has a raft of poems on this subject {using the pool metaphor} she's thinking about doing Meredith Wilson's "Trouble" in the Baltimore show. I'm sure that you will see one of them here soon.)

Sorry for the ramble
I am sure I hardly got the poem
It was just a Proust cookie for me
took me back to hanging out with my older brother jitterbug when he played pool
I knew you are homeboy
Your roots in Baltimore known to me
That is why I mentioned it.

I was raised in the black ghetto between Little Italy and Jew town.
Fairmont and Collington came later.

i used to go to the laundromat on lombard when i lived in little italy. do you still live in baltimore? l heard the projects came down. i was born in herring court in the old pratt street projects. thanks westie and L-Rod - hope you can make it to the pib party - would love to meet you.
