asphalt summer

Post by constantine » March 28th, 2008, 9:26 pm

one does not choose his fate
it arrives in increments, growing
like shadows with the sun's passage
it taps upon your shoulder, whispering
suggestive murmurs from the back row,
glimpses - darting and peripheral
dance upon the horizon,
waves of heat above an asphalt summer
a mirage that tantalizes and promises
in the midst of denial, cajoling
convincing, surely you are closing in
all signs point to...
the advice is sound - objections discounted,
logic prevails...
it's your turn now
(indeed)
as the scythe passes, sharply
through the dessicated fronds and grasses
that sustains nothing but your own demise,
concealed in undulating waves of camoflage
bagged, like the lunch of a schoolboy
taken by the red-faced bully...

the corpse never reads his epitaph,
chiseled by hands - harder than marble

they had a grocery store at Eastern and Caroline, down the street from where you lived for a while.
