when i was a kid
everything reminded me of something
everything was something different
the fingers of my hand were not only fingers
they were characters with personalities
separate and distinct
i named one frenchy because of its shape
it reminded me of a guy who would be named frenchy
next to frenchy was tex
tex was bigger and the nail had a down home look
then there was vito the trigger finger
one even reminded me of my father
nothing was what it appeared to be
and everything had a purpose
now, my fingers are only fingers
and i bite my nails habitually
any dirt under my nails compels me
to remove it by any means at hand
they are not my friends anymore
they are a nuisance and
nag me with their imperfections
sometimes, i put them in my pockets
or sit on them to avoid confrontation
i feel sorry for them
the loss of identity, the confusion
my behavior inflicts upon them
i'd apologize if it would help
but i'd feel funny doing that
they wouldn't understand anyway
