steppenwolf

Post by constantine » October 22nd, 2009, 4:18 pm

the less time I have the more selfish I get
I begin to resent the impositions
the protocol of give and take
each question demands an answer
eyes cling in their embrace
the helix doubles unto itself
then spirals out of control

there are things I have to do
my footprints are impatient
yesterday, I was a lover of history
of marble carved metopes
as lapith and centaur grappled
for my soul like the corpse of Patroklos
I entered Hades blithely
then cried, as her shade withdrew
shying from my touch like the ebbing tide

and if I have loved, or
was ever to love again
what of it?
Janus has two faces -
night follows day
is this not so?
my mind wearies of keeping accounts
why complicate matters?
why get in the way?

the wind howls and demands an audience
the moon suggests in nudges and winks
the tree embraces both mother and father
the mushroom feasts upon the dead

it's all too cozy
I am filled with suspicions
I detect a plan -
an organization that implies control
it chafes and humbles
with a mocking arrogance
that precludes my efforts
and renders me inconsequential
I can't face that!
I run and call it freedom
like a wolf enslaved by the wild

the contradictions and complexities that Hesse was noted for are woven through this tale of frustration as a man considers who he is, great ending, but the whole poem has power, dino

excellent stuff. you can run, but there's really no where to hide in the billions of light years.
