Coup d'Etat

Golpe De Estado
(Coup d’État)
Chile, September 11, 1973

Death of freedom.
Choices cease to
be, individualism vanishes.
Autonomy lost.

Existence constrained as
freedom flees - fleeting
grasping, gasping
harnessing happiness as

Laughter is lost.
Kissing away
justice; corroded as
if rusted steel.

Monotony wins.
Never knowing liberty again,
oppression blinding to the
people who have yet to

Taste the raw, unconstrained
sweetness of independence. Forced to
ration their thoughts with
quarantined emotion.

Autonomy lost,
beings, individuals,
cease to choose.
Death of freedom.

2006

this poem certainly captures the picture of that day

I remember that day, I could feel it pass through my poet brain
like a fascist bullet of ten thousand poems crying out, ten thousand
revolutionary songs bleeding into the night.

You turn my head and make me look at something that was so far away I didn't see it when it happened. We need more poems like this. jim

sí, día triste... especialmente para gran cantidad de gente en Chile y Latinoamérica, por razonas obvias. What is not obvious is your poem: brilliant, Lucy!, bravo!!! I was specially touched by these lines, gracias! :)

Taste the raw, unconstrained
sweetness of independence. Forced to
ration their thoughts with
quarantined emotion.

Thank you, everyone!

Eugene, I've never recorded my poetry onto an mp3. Maybe one day  Thank you! Rabbit, Trucking, Jim and Arcadia, thank you as well. It's a brief glance at the history of my roots, where I stem from and what keeps me grounded...
