Look for me among these trees.
I shall be one of them--
my feet tasting earth again,
sipping its ancient wine.
Winters will pass, April rains, summer suns.
Then you will see me
joyfully shower gold
on every borrowing or begging wind.
Long, slow year on year
I will welcome mornings, green or gray,
and wait for you.
Then, if by plan or chance
you come to me,
I may not walk or even turn away.

Re: Reincarnation
For me, a sole carnation is enough—
no need for long-stem roses in a rich
bouquet of symbolism or expense,
no proletarian romance ascribed
to daisy weeds or fields of Queen Anne’s lace—
a sole carnation’s plenty life for me.
This single incarnation of my soul
however long’s – if infinite – my whole.
But I believe in science and the free
exchange of thought and often think of grace
in terms atomic: atoms I’ve imbibed
for my imperfect life are pastures whence
the next & next green grass arises— which
will not be me, but something else’s rough.
