the way out

Post by saw » April 25th, 2011, 6:23 pm

we walked in the tall corn
wild flapping waves of grain
like those tv ads at three a.m.
when channel nine goes off the air

I would have surely been lost
if it weren't for granddaddy's
knowing footprints to plant
my tiny boots inside

he told me stories hour upon hour
sang Mississippi John Hurt songs
as we slipped in and out of stalks,
Blue Harvest Blues, Oh Mary Don't You Weep

Cow Honking Blues, and he talked
like he sang, a fiery blue streak soft
and raspy, flying over the fields
like black magpies in july

I told him I was scared 'cause I couldn't see
where I was going, so he picked me up
by my overall strap, cradled me in farmer arms
kept on awalkin', whisperin' all along to me

"It's like this, when fear gets to playin'
with yer mind boy, just remember
that fear is nuthin' but a silly dream
love, is the only thing that is real, and love

will make a mountain lion turn tail
run back inside his grotto, Hell, son
a bad man would sooner wrassle a pack
of coyotes than mess with a man with love

in his heart, you'll be alright boy
keep the truth on your tongue
a song in your heart, and you
will always find your way."
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading
