In the days when America was great
opium and marijuana was legal
when great writers like Mark Twain
told Americans how ignorant they were
and people would listen to his words
when Poe enthralled his readers
with stories and poems that showed
a dark streak in the American psyche
there was room for greatness
but where did this greatness go
maybe only the raven knows
or Huck Finn, greatness in an
American boy's adventure
But what else could be called great
besides great writers and thinkers
like Emerson or William James
Herman Melville and Walt Whitman
inventors and farmers too had
something great
something about, give me your tired
and poor, your huddled masses...
thanks to Emma Lazarus's famous poem
there a vision of American greatness
the great American melting pot
but somebody melted the pot
and now America has to be made great, again
Poe is rolling over in his grave
if Mark Twain was here he would roll his eyes
