The Poetry of Key Lime Pie

Post by saw » September 9th, 2023, 9:41 am

It doesn't always happen
in trashy soaps on daytime television
I know this intimately, no
sometimes an unexpected visit home
during a a normal work day
might uncover your wife
and your very best "friend"
tumbling in satin sheets you paid for,
And all you wanted was a long sleeve shirt

for an unusually chilly day in paradise
Oh Key West, you must take the beauty
of the sunsets with the occasional lightning strike
most days remarkable teal water and mangoes
fill your eyes to the brim, but you just never know
when the sun might suddenly fall from the sky
and leave you in darkness for many years to come
I still can't get that picture out of my dreams
the two you trusted the most......lesson numero uno

betrayal can disguise itself in cloaks of many colors

it's not like this defines you
you move on to create another fulfilling scenario
a rich life with children and grands
we are all made up of complex ingredients
and there is nothing like a good slice of Key Lime Pie
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

now that the run is over
and we're mostly all here
winded
sidelined
sipping our water or gatorade
and watching the next heat
I look back
and see some things I did wrong
or could have done better
and might if I ran the race again
but I can't
I'm done
I had my shot
did my best (at the time)
didn't do great, but not that badly
middle of the pack
where most of us finished
got a few coins in the bank
not many - but enough
got my health
mostly - startin' to wear out
I never did find Her
The One
but came close once or twice
close enough for sweet memories
close enough to imagine
what almost was
what might have been
.

seems natural
to lay it all out
before the evaluating self
that rises up in later years
to qualify, maybe quantify
and make a stab at truth
as we see it
of course we may be biased
but that doesn't mean dishonest
we spread it all out on the table
like old newspaper clippings
maybe old photographs, she
with that smile, you with youthful
skin, the purpose is not to be
uber critical....it's merely history
as it unfolded with us in it
with the wherewithal we possessed
there isn't a grading system in place
it's all a bit curious...isn't it ?
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading
