Seaside Cafe - Journal entry
I drive 200 miles to the ocean.
I sit alone, drink OJ spiked with
absolut, watch gulls, listen to the
hisssss hummmm of the tide, hear
my own thoughts wave, then subside,
medicate myself with saltwater
and too many cigarettes, promise
myself I will stop tomorrow, make
my way back to a vacant hotel room
where I dare to flirt with a balcony breeze,
sieze moments of solitude by documenting
them in black and white as journal entries,
then drive 200 miles home to paint
my page with watercolor memories.

a box full of mangled truck stop dinner napkins
from back when the road went on forever
caffeine crazed rambles in the midnight hours
A great american hypertrash novel lurks in there somewhere

reminds me of a sketch i did, i think somewhere in eastern oregon, at a decrepit mom'n pop motel, which was my element, and shall be again... god how i love my horizon and all that empty space...
well, i couldn't find that sketch, digging thru boxes, but i did find the scratchings of a poem i wrote in a state of subdued awe, on a wide, wide dry lake bed in southeastern oregon's blessed anonymity. i'm fairly certain i'll never forget that one, at least not for a great long while.

You just inspired me, mnaz!
Let's include some hand-written journal entries... poetry like this one of yours...... in the book ....Want to?
.....
i am grateful you have all
come with me to the ocean
where i was waiting,
sitting with my feet
in seafoam, my head
traveling a shoreline
mystery, trying to
find the answer of myself
because when you came
and joined me, i remembered
who i wasn't again and who i was
and am, you being not part of me
and so much like my arms,
my neck, my shoulders,
my back, my troubled spirit
calmed by our unity
and our separateness
thank you

still looking... I've moved around so much lately; it's a little up for grabs. But I like the idea. I looked around some more-- found a map that I sketched out on tracing paper, not sure when, of my early wander, the "first wave"....
It was never my intention to shrink, or "de-mystify" the open spaces, however...

dear norman --
thank you! may i return this compliment to you?
learning to gauge life by new and yet unknown standards, while allowing oneself the freedom of enough variation in processing them according to new chances and challenges, sounds like something that would offer a winding and rocky, but interesting and inspiring path to wander on.
(interesting side note: my notebook/journal entry from above is from '99. i was 30 then, too)
