Cheironeia

This is Constantine's artlog. He posted his poems in his own artlog forum for several years. He named the forum "Constantinople" and described it as "A byzantine journey through life's labyrinth."

Cheironeia

Post by constantine » April 30th, 2008, 7:30 pm

Certainties?
Dark and few in any man's life.
A call for surrender at the final stand;
A coldness grasping every hand.
Sharp and steely taut the strife -
Shield to shield they gave their life.
Before and before, again and again
In the soil of Thebes no Theban men.
Death within the lion's paw
For those of the Sacred Band

Eraste and Eromenos
With spear and shield the last embrace
As fate arrived to take their place.
Such courage and esprit de corps!
Again and again, before and before
Life is battle - death is war.
Relent, or be put to the sword -
In Theban tongue no Theban word...

At Cheironeia the lion stands.
Honor within the lion's paw
For those of the Sacred Band.

For those of the Sacred Band
I want to be in that band
when the saints go marching in
