Halloweird (a poet's tale)

Post by mtmynd » October 26th, 2014, 3:51 pm

Halloweird
(a poet's tale)

i answered the knock on the door
but nobody was there
not a trace to be seen
on the porch, the sidewalk
just a silence...

i closed the door but just
as i did - another knock
but i waited to hear another
maybe another knock
but instead - a voice...

i slowly opened the door
and there was nobody
...nothing in view
but the voice whispering
'trick or treat'
'trick of treat'
but nobody was there...

i had the candy in my hand
i did not want a trick
i favored giving a treat
but who would i give it to?
there was nobody there...

so i closed the door
again
a voice whispering
'trick or treat'
'trick of treat'
not even a question
just a monotone voice
'trick or treat'
but nobody was there
nobody was there
nobody there

for the third time i
closed the door
my left hand filled
with treats for somebody
but nobody was there
and the voice returned
'trick or treat'
'trick or treat'
and i again went to the door
but this time, this time...
i opened the door quickly
as fast as i could
jerking it back 'whack!'
there stood jack

with a lantern in hand
that cast a ghostly feel
that made me uncomfortable
and the wind began blowing

in the distance - thunder!
following a lightening strike
that lit the skies
filled with strange shadows -
figures of pumpkins carved
wispering thru the night
'trick or treat'
'trick or treat'
but in a language i did not know
but i understood as if i was
in another land,
in another country,
in another time...

my left hand filled with candy
now loosened its grip
and to the ground they fell
on piece at a time
dropping slowly and
upon reaching the ground
melted into puddles
that reflected the faces
of the devil-like creatures

with faces of demons they spoke
from the reflections
'trick or treat'
'trick or treat'
and my eyes grew dim
and my nerves grew tight
and i felt my body changing

i grew heavier and heavier
and the winds slammed me
against a wall
and i looked around
and there i saw
in a mirror hung closely
myself returned from
some mysterious place
that left me confused
repeating, repeating,
'trick or treat?'
'trick or treat?'
questioning whether I
had been where I'd been
or if I had been tricked
by my own Halloween Treat.

Sweet
reason is over rated, as is logic and common sense-i much prefer the passions of a crazy old woman, cats and dogs and jungle foliage- tropic rain-and a defined sense of who brings the stars up at night and the sun up in the morning---
