it's my birthday
just after xmas
68 years ago, a baby
came a crying into the world
and he was me
along with thousands of others
a new boy to dot
the landscape from sea
to shining sea, and that
little kid is now an old man
still running up and down
the hills, soaking in the tub
building fires in the belly
of the beast, singing in
the shower, talking in the woods
dancing when the right song
come on, even in the car
and so it is, another tiny dot
has made a spin around the sun
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

a new year
challenges will arise
be met, and in between
we can dream and love
call a friend, tell her how you feel
always say yes when
you are invited, hike
if you can, but if you can't
resist the pull of gravity
sing and dance in your heart
even if your feet never touch the ground
even if your voice is a whisper
push back, climb
when yo are able, love
without restraint, write
laugh, try to overcome
the forces that want to bury you
but don't do it all alone
call on your comrades
head into the wind arm in arm
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

The new year
a week flies by
Wanting to say
I'm younger than
that now....forget
who that song was by
Oh yeah the Byrds I think?
There's so much stored up
In this noggin, and much
forgotten......

Delineating name & form agent nouns occupy space.

Grooming for adjectives.

Verbs gunning for the best friction.

The song "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" by Dylan has been my constant companion all damn week. It just won't let go.
I'm gonna buy a flute and a gun that shoots and shoot the flute then throw the gun in the river.

Don't know if that will work.

earworms
songs stuck on repeat
better be good ones
and even if they are
man, they get old
even
Snarky Puppy's "Shofukan"
even
Lalo Schifrin's "Mission: Impossible"
even
Don Ellis' "Samba Bajada"
no cure
but to wait it out
and get a new one

crazy weather
schizoid winter
3 below this morning
2 inches of fresh powder
rain expected midweek
temp in the 40s
turning powder to slush
then cold
turning slush to ice
frozen concrete
to be covered
with more snow
even my Yak Trax
can't cope

oh 2017 I didn't expect
you'd nail me just as the year
is getting it's legs, but wham
big ass kidney stone
sent me to Union Memorial
for 4 days and that backup
caused a raging UTI that
managed to get into my bloodstream
and I still have that stone
it's stuck, won't be able to pass
but have to get infection cleared up
before the docs can go in and get it
so I take my meds and watch tv
take my oxy and listen to music
seems surgery is the only way
and they will go in thru said kidney
to fetch it, and for now I have a tube
pierced into the that kidney to relieve
the pressure, and my walking streak
of 154 days in a row is over, but soon
as this ordeal is over, gonna start
a new streak...oh 2017...how cruel you are
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading
