kidney stone is trapped
can't make it's way out
so they give me the shock waves

I want to be hiking along the Gunpowder River, immersed in the rusty orange and red of autumn, but the stone says deal with me. So I go get an X-ray,... tomorrow the doc will decide the next move. I think about my 91 year old father living alone and what a tough mutha he is. WWII tough, cheap steak tough....he never complains, kind of marvels at his losses matter of factly, so i know this 7mm stone is a big nothing in the scheme of things. I look out the window, golden leaves are twisting in the wind, and I dream of the woods...helps with the discomfort, there is something calming about rains of color....there is magic in the wind, now
some slender red into the mix...if the shock waves didn't work, it's surgery, but whatever it takes to get me out on the trail

I miss my dog
she loved the woods along the river
her black fur a stark
running backdrop
to the paintbrush of fall
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

Layering has always been the key
and you don;t wannna wait too long
to peel something off, you learn
the art of stripping, and covering up
it's the science of survival in the cold
don't wanna sweat, so you learn the instincts
that will help you make it through the day...take it off
put it on.....the change in the air
gets your attention, preparation is the key,
almost time for the Carhartt's and the DuoFold
Where's my damn balaclava ?

When is your show Mark....Nov. 1st ?
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

you aint nuthin' but a hound dog
said Elvis, no....not Costello
nor the Raven's Dumervil

need to sell some art
been a bit dazed and confused
stones that don't belong, knees
that need some WD-40, a head
that forgets more than my neighbor
ever knew...he likes to throw his cigarette
butts on my sidewalk, he's new
we have no relationship, so I tell him
two Halloweens ago I ran into the house
next door thinkin' I was gonna
put out this fire on the second floor,
but had to run out and leave it to the men
on the hook and ladders, and they were
amazing, from arrival to departure

my smoke alarm was going off
carbon monoxide alarm as well
the flames shot out ten feet like a blowtorch
against my silver maple

so i politely says to this kid next door on the other side
I've seen the power of a single spark
how about you put those butts in this here
bucket o' sand I set up....he grunts
goes around back and revs up his Harley
for a couple of hours

I may be an old man
but I ain't someone to fuck with either
I like to get along, be a good neighbor
I gave the neighbors in the fire a little money
when they lost everything, i kept their dogs
for a month or so, so I'm sure we can work
something out....but ya never know these days
some folks think freedom means doing whatever
the fuck you want with no regard for your fellow man

I hate that attitude, but in the end believe
we all have more in common than not...so today
I slipped my contact info in his mailbox
told him to call me, if he ever needs anything
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

It all flew by so fast.....hanging on till my fingernails bled.....don't even talk about the toes.... Beat....Jack .....jazz.....dharma....sangha..... Red Pine an amazing translator, an interpreter of classic Chinese poetry, sutras, and the Tao de Ching ......Ferlinghetti read his poetry in San Francisco last night, he's 96 years young ........up and down ladders all day....keeps the heart pumping and yours truly sweating.....

The rising sun and the river conspire to produce water fairies this morning
under cloudless skies but last night I opened my door to see clouds crossing the moon. The wind was up too, I could not see them but I listened as countless leaves were picked up, torn from their moorings, & swirled about in that wind.

the lunar cycle
sometimes
gets the moon
caught in branches
of leafless trees

All this did not bring up memories, as autumn often does, and no thoughts of future occurrence, but just that moment in its bloom and passing was enough - just enough.

moment to moment
just don't the heart
pump so ?

surprising burst of extra warm sunshine
for the pre-halloween daze of rock-tober
so I ascended to the sky lounge
and tear off my shirt

trips in and out of the hospital exposed me no doubt
to some potent little mutha fuckin' germs that hide there
waiting for unsuspecting chumps like me, I mean
they have zero respect for their unwitting victims, just
penetrate every orifice and go to work doing their nasty business
infecting the lungs and the head, the muscles, the bones
and who would think something microscopic would be such a formidable foe,
and it's not like i hate them or anything, I understand they're just following
the natural script of trying to survive and multiply

The sun feels so good on my bare chest
I'll fry you little fuckers, til you pack up and leave
water and books, pens and paper, nearly eighty degrees today
life is good, the super-bugs are on the run
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

Living by this god-damned river - i've already written some things about but what can you do?
It just keeps flowing by the house here, carrying it's load of fallen leaves to the lake and then the sea - at least some of them will make it that far. At night it's the spooks, i mean it's just a few feet off the deck here but you can't see it and it doesn't make hardly any noise in this vicinity being deep here in front of the riverhouse, you know it's there but you can't see it - it bugs the hell out of me knowing it's right there but invisible ... spooks is what it is -

digging deep into stone
the fossils will remind us
to pardon the one thief
while leaving the other to condemn himself

outside the city
dark is dark, hands
in front of faces disappear

the blackest black lives in the woods with the bears, and you might catch a black bear's eyes if there is a little sliver of moon, but when the clouds roll in, the animals have an advantage at night, they're bred to hunt in the dark, especially the cats....and there's nothing like seeing a mountain lion's eyes in your campfire, watching you.... still as a tree on a calm evening....
man may rule the city, but the night in the country belongs to the critters, the coyotes are all over the place....my friend saw one in Baltimore County, just walkin' up the road in the daytime like the bad mutha that he was....lookin' for trouble like a teenager with angst

black is black
I want my baby back
darkness rules the night

yardbirds sitting on a wire
birds-eye view on the eve
of no return

I live in my cushy world of poetry without much guilt. I play my stand up bass, paint pictures, lug some 2x4's. drive some 3 inch screws....while children throw rocks at tanks...where all all the fucking superheroes I see on TV. Where is the Silver Surfer ? Where is the Green Lantern ?
All I see is talking heads lying to me about which candidate will make it all better. It's sick, man. No fucking Wolverines. No Iron Men to beat up the bullies. what can a poor boy do ? I care.
but I'm Shrimp man. Can't leap tall buildings. Can't stop a speeding train or a speeding bullet
Shrimp Man is impotent. He muddles along with pain for the world, but needs his escapes from reality. Sorry world, I think i have a defective cape.

Where are the Yardbirds ?
where is Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton ?
Come on Fellas, I need a new song
