I walk with a stick
carved and gorilla taped
it feels good in my hand
like a grandfather's wooden hammer

smoothed from the sweat of hands grasping a handle that waits for weathered skin...
maple perspiration joins the dirt, a new DNA is born in the repetition of arms swung with abandon, the day to day business of men in motion, dire straits called it the walk of life

I grab my fisherman's cap
my sunglasses and door key
pull on my hiking boots
grab my crooked companion
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

came around a bend in the woods
face to face with a doe, so I began
to sing to her, Home Home on the Range

and when I got to the part, " where the deer and the antelope play i substituted, " where
YOU and the antelope play...and she seemed to really dig it as we stared at each other for ten minutes straight, with barely any movement at all, and then she heard her friends coming across the meadow and decided to join them, and loped away .....later that day a black and white warbler zoomed in to land on a birch tree trunk six feet in front of me....eye to eye...and I began to think these incidents were not random, that maybe my dead mother was the deer and the bird was my deceased niece, come to say hello....how you getting along with your recovery

we just wanted you to know we are here to lend support in our altered states, so you can have something tangible to dream on, and we applaud your walks in the woods, and your determination to set out each and every day, and your log book that records each

venture... 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
