I remember being a little blond girl on the Kansas prairie in a sod house the wind whipping round the eaves outside Mommy brushing my hair (OUCH!) while staring at the candle burning in its holder on the rough-hewn plank table Daddy made thinking "Bessie's in there, somewhere; Bessie's in there" while concentrating really hard. Bessie was the cow Daddy had to slaughter the year before and we made candles from her tallow, me and Mommy did.
I remember being a late-middle-aged man in a T-bird pulling up to the light at 82nd and Holgate traveling westbound pulling out slowly with trepidation as the light changed my mind on other things worries mostly and getting t-boned by some teenegers dragracing northbound on 82nd and how at the last moment I felt God leave me entirely leave my universe entirely and knew how Jesus must have felt on the cross that day.
I remember others.
No, I don't remember not ever being here.
And I wouldn't have it any other way.
I love this place.
And all the people in it.
