Two Short Poems

Post by martinanewberry »

PALM TREES

They’ve trimmed the palm trees.

What
is
left
on
the
ground

looks like dancers who failed the audition.

LEARNING TO SIGN

We are not just speaking
we are dancing,
singing, mirroring and flashing
hands and fingers like
stars constantly
refreshing the
blue-black sky of silence

way cool- loving that dancer audition, and the palm frongs-mmmm nice write----
reason is over rated, as is logic and common sense-i much prefer the passions of a crazy old woman, cats and dogs and jungle foliage- tropic rain-and a defined sense of who brings the stars up at night and the sun up in the morning---

Lovely poetry... both. Thanks for sharing them here!

I especially like this line as well as the formatting in the first poem.
looks like dancers who failed the audition.
and
stars constantly
refreshing the
blue-black sky of silence
in the second poem

awesome...awesome...the dancers and the dancing...awesome!!!

I’d just proposed and she had just said yes
and I was so excited and my voice
was louder than its standard way-too-loud
and everyone I met I had to tell
from widows over coffee after church
to folks in supermarket check-out lines
and grammar didn’t count and sentences
with incomplete vocabularies spat
the story that I’d just composed with her
that changed my life because it didn’t change
the old reality that we had loved
so long in one another—yet the dance
it took to sign and mime and gesture this
to George and Betty – deaf – surpassed the words.

I liked learning to sign
it was the one line
that was quite fine
All as one completely entwined

I loved both poems, and I am soooo happy for you, Joel! Your joy and exhuberance simply blow apart the margins of our poetry and our comments!

Martina, here is a palmtree minimalist poem for you:

Palm tree, feather duster,
Feather duster, palm tree,
Cleaning the cobwebs
from the balconies of heaven.

You have me going, Martina (my fave grandaughter's name, by the way). Will post my take on signing. Hugs, Sue

Thank you for your comments. I'm very grateful. I love the "feather duster," "balconies of heaven." Lovely.
