I just report all the money I make as an independent contractor (freelance graphics, selling paintings, renting bedrooms) .... and they don't have me on their shit list. If you got a 1099 for the money you earned performing as a poet, just report it. It's easy. You make money, you pay taxes on it. I don't even get a 1099 from anybody. I just keep a record of how much I earned, take my info to H&R Block and pay them to fill out the forms.
