morning sunshine warm on my shoulders

ovenbirds hidden in the woods
"ka-chik, ka-chik, ka-chik, ka-chik, KA-CHIK!"

a soldier beetle lands on my arm
I gently blow him off

a sip of coffee

pollen thick on the car
a whiff of rubber
its tires

single-engine plane low overhead
1000 feet, maybe
heading for Jaffrey, maybe

another sip of coffee

the dog presents me a stick
tail waving from side to side

"not now," I tell him
he lays down near my feet for a good chew

another sip

somewhere the shrill keening of a hawk
somewhere the nasal "Hee-haw" of a phoebe
somewhere another familiar melody
from a singer unknown

an ant scurries by with a piece of leaf
bigger than she

another sip

cold by now
time to refresh from the pot within

"not now" I think
for now
I'd rather stay connected here
a little while longer
.

sweet morn in review
take notice
it's all there, open
your eyes' mind... 8)
the death of empathy is the birth of barbarism
