enchanted basketball

I would be a yellow-bellied coward
( and they are the worse, of course )
nothing like the red, white or blue bellies,
if I chose to write only of butterflies and puppy dogs

it would be a cop out
to only speak of gold in a world that runs
the gamut from Aluminum to Zinc
but "A" at times is for Amaryllis

just showing off, in that handmade earthen pot
sittin' there on the extra-wide weathered sill
"Z" at times can be for the zombies roaming in and out
of the abandoned houses of absentee landlords

in this expanding population the alphabet is taxed,
resources limited by greedy hog-shit connoisseurs
where the mad evil doctor sits in his laboratory
of twisted truths, cooking up rationalization

So I mix it up when I write
lounging in the waning position of the heart
and moon, inside the A to Z somewhere
there is a quasi-balance, so I twirl the globe on the tip of my finger

like an enchanted basketball,
dribble the juices down the front of my shirt
too long in the tooth for the picket lines
my sword long ago replaced by my ballpoint pen

but people my age are still writing their abc-s on protest signs.
I guess I'm lazy

how very unlimited A~Z can be, inviting everyone to learn, to know, to tell, to create
A~Z is unlimited in there possibilities and have been since A~Z came into existence
