the squirrels of morning

[saw]

sluggish blood, thick
from the ravages
that came last night

you see, you never know
who you will be there
in the molasses morning

sleep alone is not enough
only divine intervention
will pick you up today

off the metaphoric floor
give you a nudge out of the mind's door
to bathe in the sunshine of living

and use your real legs
and swing your real arms
and swivel your two ton head

to see the upper branches
watch a magic gray squirrel turn silver
leap recklessly into tomorrow

from limb to limb to limb
just to show you,
it really is possible

some scamper
to remind us of inner scampering
