I keep listening to the same stuff, recently...
Wire...'70s Brit-punk
Sonic Youth.... dissonance rock, alt. tunings, etc.
Meat Puppets.... Cowpunk
Pretenders...'80s punk... the first album...Chrissie Hynde's good girl/bad girl whiplash....
PJ Harvey's atonal wailing
The Melvins.... NW sludge metal
Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black.... schlock metal
Pain Teens.... industrial acid kitchen sink metal-esque nonsense
Beck... stereopathic soul manure stuff...
What went wrong? I used to be such a nice young man....
I am not well...

Sounds like you're in a good place.... not having all the answers
and security, but free of a "soul-sucking" career and onto another
direction which you believe in. That's what I'm looking for, too....
Actually, I've always done the 'punk' thing to some extent (but where did this 'metal' thing come from...geesh)... I dunno.... I suppose I'm "unsophisticated" in the finer points of music.... I dig jazz, though I have yet to explore it in any depth. And much of classical is genius art for the ages which doesn't penetrate very deeply into me. I have always connected more with rough, raw soul and/or rhythm in music.... music that had to come out and light a fire, ready or not. My sister, the artist, has turned me on to a lot of great stuff like this....
Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it....

for the last couple years, i've listened to a small sample of musicians almost exclusively: clash, dylan, dead, the band, van morrison, joe s. & the mescaleros, daniel lanois
don't know what it is...there is new music i like, but don'y spare the effort to bother...i stay with the old stuff that i'm comfortable with
don't know if this means you're getting old!
