this is part of a shakespeare edition published between 1894 and 1897 by j.m.dent and co., aldine house, london.

i got it from joan, an old lady from devon, england, when we were spending our summer vacation there in 1983.
we lived in the house next to her, which we had exchanged with the owners for that summer. she was our lovely neighbour, who informed us about everything we needed to know, from the rules of the local garbage disposal to the milkman's schedule, and who kept inviting us over for tea and british cottage-style elegance.
she was a sweet lady with a lot of tales to tell, with a twinkle in her eye, and a wonderful british tone of voice.

she gave us farewell presents when we left. mine was the shakespeare.

this tanakh (acronym of the initial hebrew letters of the three parts it consists of: torah, nevi'im (prophets) and ketuvim (writings)) is a heirloom from my great-great-uncle heinrich, who got it for his 16th birthday in 1869, a hundred years before i was born. it is full of his tiny pencil notes and remarks.

ahhhhh sweet
fairytale heaven
surrounded by old books
sittin' quietly in the middle
dipped in love and wishing dust
sneezing for joy

I love old books...
it's strange I don't have any
I shall have to amass some for my dotage
that and apparently
lots and lots of cats!
I used to walk with my head in the clouds but I kept getting struck by lightning!
Now my head twitches and I drool alot. Anonymouse

these are a different kind of "old" books - they are old friends to me rather than really being old.

they are my dicitionaries (german - english - german).
i'm having them since 15 years now, and have glued them together anew and renewed their covers many, many times.
