we can jam in a leftover rain puddle
hell yeah at dawn or just before
it's the act of basking in the lamp
even if the rain is unclad & leftover

sometimes you can even graph these things out
the women in the village
are killing snakes around the well
screaming out the whole time
at the edge of the field
a line of silent pines
thriving in the mind
let me tell you
life's a bit like nothing else

all for the living
snakes on everything
beetles firing poison
ringo playing in florida
with 500lb. groupers
the silence of morn
the pine trees
like they was there
forever and ever
the winding down
of all that ever was

reading & writing all morning
wonder if i should worry 'bout myself
just realized when i'm not physically on a bike
i'm still spiritually on a bike

... that's how i do it
when out on the bike
got a small notebook
and a pen
when i see a spark
i stop & try to put it in word
it don't always translate
but that does not stop me from the attempt
rain all day
now it's past midnight
and skies are clear

its rough tryin to write on a train
bumpin along
so sometimes i just
let the pen roll with the flow
its kinda fun
like some mysterious entity
is drawing for you
as u slip slide along
glad ur still here
i think almost all the real poets
have left and now doreens
sayin she cant write no mo

... i experiment with
things like that too -
saw something once where some artist
tied a pen to the ends of tree branches
most likely to be affected by the wind
then put paper under the pen and kicked back
as wind,tree, & pen wrote his poems for him
the results fascinated me -
i saw where doreen said she
couldn't write anymore
she expressed that in writing of course
cracked me up

dig that tree thing
sometimes i just close
my eyes and draw
when opened i find something
to go with and create a
totally original image
been doin it for years
same with wire
i'll find a piece on the job
that i see an image within
then bring it out
the best wires and rebars
are the ones that have
been run over by tractors and
trucks for months
i'd love to take a mangled pile
of rebar and a welding machine
and just create with it till i
go blind ....thats been the
plan for years, thats what i was
doing till my wife decided to
start a new life in the 90's and
we left my haven in the country
the welder been sittin in a carrige
house in b'more for 10 years
funny how we get side tracked in life
maybe when i cant rebar nomo
and medicare kicks in at 65
right now im slammed with building an
art museum, maybe someday i'll be
in it

the best wires and rebars

i hear all of that -
when i was making
all those driftwood installations
down on the lake shore
i used to pick and choose
but after some experience with it
discovered i could use it all
because it had its own voice
and no outcome could be predicted
from one moment to the next
it all became easy
if i would just stay
the hell out of the way
found out that i needed to start each one
with what i came to call
an "anchor" piece -
usually some sizable or tall tree trunk
once you got that set in
it was a "free-play" zone
with the driftwood spirits coming out of the woodwork
man, i spent hours happy as a tree toad in the rain
building - tearing down - building again
building - moving up the shore to a new spot
building again -
hours ...
got myself nostalgic now talking about it
don't live so close to the lake anymore
used to walk about a mile
down through the woods
and i'd be there
but now i'm over on the slopes
of Tug Hill
hell, to reach the shore from here
i'd have to hop in a car and drive for miles
ugh ...
down back in the landlord's junkyard
he has welding equipment there
i don't know how to use it
but if i did ...
he has this big steel bin
full of junk vacuum cleaners,
kid's tricycles, shelves from fridges,
old bottled compressed air tanks,
hoses, old wheel rims ...
every time pass that bin
i just stop and look
my mind going from zero to 150 mph
i just go WOW - look at that !

the welding is hot
and hard on the eyes
that was the bottom line
that made me stick
with the wire way back
when

poets of old
poets older
than the hills
waitin on a ride
5:17 am
hot saturday to come
gotta fix a girder/lintel
like a surgeon on
architectural plywood
no room for error
poets in motion
oceans rising and falling
like the night
yesterday at 5:45 on the
train, there was that ball
of a sun bright orange
sittin there on the horizon
star of stars

genuine day of rest

but people just get worried

better to just say ok
