the planet sighs
indifferent to our selfish needs
she shakes her head

she shakes her finger
scolds the mountaintop removers
oh West Virginia

once mighty beauty
only unfettered greed could
behave so cruelly

never knew gray
like I know it today
the sun is reluctant

defy the haze
embrace the burgeoning beginnings
I am the same man

thinking hard
'bout the day my first son was born
right here in this house

known about the snowstorm for days
guess my ancient forefathers
routinely blindsided

snow has stopped
the digging will go on and on
I'm in no hurry

shoveled sixteen tons
snow tossed to the side of the road
way better than coal mining

digging frozen water
still has some acid rain in it
but I ain't gonna eat it

and going to breathe it in
color it with artificial colors and dyes
pretend that it's all good

just gonna throw it
pile it into a huge white mountain
and wait for the sun

monster storms
tromps on baltimore with it's huge feet
godzilla rules

the monster has retreated
the overhangs drip with icy remnants
I type a few words

what seemed like
such a big deal to all the people of television
is now only drops of water

tv folk
yap yap with smiles
hairstyles with doom

alarm sounds
trumpets blare
"BLIZZARD!"

the new alarms
signal the frozen depths of the old man
he has come again

deep in the deep freeze
homeless men haven't a chance
too cold to even beg

feeling fortunate
to have a hot fire to ease my pain
I know I'm a lucky man

cold rain comes hard and fast
inside my domicile it's dry and toasty
man the joy a roof can bring
