to be reborn into the sticky
wonder of jam
where it's at

early morning
the new hampshire air
clear as gin
with a touch of fall
the deer flies
slow and bumbling
as if forgetting
that I am prey
the dog bounds ahead
happily unchained
as we tramp home
along this summer road
my thoughts of coffee
and a poached egg
his
only of the moment
the smells
the sounds
of the surrounding wood

sounds like heaven
still somewhat humid here
cool nights though

trying to extract the joy
it's there but hiding among the thorns
so I put on my eclipse glasses
to see if I can find it...oh yes
the cycle of life is a flaming roulette wheel
spinning and clicking tests of your mettle
no one escapes the reds and blacks
the ride is often full of rain-induced ruts
but sometimes when all the gears mesh
we sail down the hill on our bike so fast
we have to remove our feet from the pedals

more than a jam
more than a plan
than a melting clock day
all those people hollering, "get the hell out of my way!"
more than what is dreamed
in our philosophies
or the noises on the street at 1:49 am.
all the artists merge
taking that left or right once again
and when do we just begin the beguine?

all the faces
lined up for the final roll call

brunch at jojo's
for ummmmteenth time

another summer slips by
yet there's still a month officially to go
kinda hot out there today

got off my bike at the cemetery
just yesterday
to read the names
on those stones
they've all come such a long way
when i got to the boundary

down on the water last eve
my friend was entertaining us
with his guitar and repertoire
he has this magicians case of props
he's a hoot, but a damn good player too
and I'm sippin' my pilsner in the late summer breeze
watching the seabirds dig the music
and the crowd is happy like there ain't no war
like there ain't no raping and pillaging
and there ain't....not here at the jetty
and I feel so lucky to be able to escape
all that shit with my privilege
just for a few hours...no news...no Trump
just men women and a few kids
running around in the sand, and then
my female friend of 40 years shows up
in her low cut green floral dress lookin' like
a mermaid and we have some scallops and fish
and laugh and talk and know we are the lucky ones

I'm imagining this was Fells Pt.
used to love Berths's and Cat's Eye pub
where a guy jumped into the harbor
in between sets when I was playing
a tune about love with Jamie and Wayne on slide
apparently the guy turned up later and hadn't drowned
