Even As We Remember...

Now do we promise never to forget,
acknowledge beyond our means the debt.
Let us engrave their names upon stone walls,
listen to bugled, melancholy Taps,
the piercing skirl of Amazing Grace?
None of them now will answer new calls
to arms. Where did they fall? To be exact,
we consult maps–but the maps have forgotten--
then, in the old way, salute young emperors,
bearing pharisaic wreaths, planning their wars.
