Captain Dog

Beady patrician eyes
set off by cream
furry little muzzle,

big paws to grow into,
he is exploring
the lawn with his mouth.

What a noble
silhouette,
high on a hill, in the back yard!

He stalks the older dog,
launches a sortie against her flank,
sustains a nip to snout.

Undeterred,
impetuous,
imperious,

altogether too cute,
he’s supremely confident
between my feet
