Need your help. - What ARE the Eight?

Post by Doreen Peri » February 5th, 2006, 9:59 pm

Studio Eight was a name I chose because the number 8 looks like the symbol for infinity... only sideways.

Infinity = Endless possibilities.

But I just liked the sound of it, mostly. ;)

The site is not only these forums. The rest of it is still in development and it's time to move forward to get this thing set up.

We've purchased and installed a Content Management System which we're going to use to develop the rest of the site. This will mean some of you will have areas where you will be able to log on and post to add content to the site.

The idea is a site which features and showcases the works of artists in various genres.

You can see the initial set up of the concept by navigating through these pages ... starting here ... http://studioeight.tv

But those sections will change because I encompassed too much to start out with.

So, what we'd like to do is to divide the site into EIGHT categories in keeping with the Studio Eight name.... 8 categories to cover a variety of artistic genres.

Below is what I've come up with so far for the category ideas.

But I need your help. Could you help me edit this list of EIGHT please?

________________________

What are the EIGHT?

1- Written Word - Poetry & Prose

2- Spoken Word

3- Visual Arts

4- Music

5- Theater

6- Dance

7- Film

8- ?

Thanks for your help!

Then again, maybe this is STILL too big.

Maybe we don't NEED 8 categories.

Maybe we only need 4 to start with.

WRITING
VISUAL ARTS
MUSIC
SPOKEN WORD

I donno... I'm overwhelmed with too many ideas and limited time to follow through ...

I'd just like to get your feedback about how you'd like to see the rest of the site develop.

Thanks!

and
plastic arts (including painting, sculpting, jewellry making, sketching, ....)

yeah or we could call it 3D art... hmmm... thanks, judih!

I worry that if I set up more categories than I have content for, it will look... umm........ empty... like it looks now...

But I truly do love the idea of EIGHT categories..

time to set the system up and launch it.. it's been way too long since any content was added to the rest of this site...

and I still want to do the newsletter idea, too... just haven't had time to post anything about it yet

appreciate your input!

Right now I got kind of a nauseous feeling maybe it is dread.

What about this sight

http://www.studioeight.tv/phpbb/index.php

Is that going to stay the same?

Not that it matters.

Some of those fruits kind of look like nectarines. maybe I am just hungry. I love nectarines.

I might have the same feeling. But I'm trying to get rid of the nauseus feeling of dread by organizing it better.

Will it stay the same? There's only content on 2 pages... the writers pages and the artists pages. No, I won't remove the content, for sure! But the rest of the categories will probably change and the look of the navigation will most likely change.

Yeah, they look sorta like nectarines. Reach right in and have one! ;)

How about ...

1- Written Word - Poetry & Prose

2- Spoken Word

3- Visual Arts

4- Music

5- Theater

6- Dance

7- Film

8- All the rest

What doesn't fit into 1-7 and their subcategories goes into 8 - All the rest; a jambalaya of expressions

Jack-
I'm not going to change these boards, 'truckin'. We're not going to get rid of the interactivity which MAKES this place! So, don't go thinking that's going to happen. I'm just trying to figure out how to start developing the rest of the site. I had a basic set up but it's too complicated. There are too many sections to it. About your comment about having no idea what I'm talking about well I have no idea what you're talking about. LOL! ;) Thanks for your input!

Dave-
That's what I'm trying to do... make it easy to understand. Uncomplicate it and get it going so we can add content to all the other sections of the site.

Deb-
That's a very good idea... to have an eclectic section ... a mix..... a jambalaya of sorts. Maybe call that section "multimedia"? Hmm... I also would like to keep a Uniting the Arts section for links to other arts sites plus interviews with various webmasters about their sites. Time to rethink this list.

Thanks all for your comments! You are helping a lot!

I think we should name the Film section in such a way that includes computer animation, such as Flash.
'cause I'm learning Flash.

I was inspired to learn Flash by the work of a Flash artist named David Firth.

Most of it is highly disturbing, so watch at your own risk...
The "Salad Fingers" series will give you a good idea of what he's about without making you want to swallow your own eyeballs too much.

Doreen...great idea(s)...distillation is always a good thing and I like the idea of Eight because I think that was inspired (the whole kit and kaboodle!)

As for number 8 (the sticky sticking point  ), although I love and respect my judih (notice the possessiveness) I hate (no, dislike is a better word) the idea of "plastic arts"... Not the idea, mind you, but the word 'plastic' because, hey!...I refuse to use even a plastic cup. ( I know, I know...plastic make the world go round and I know what she was doing here.)

I digress...how about 'Handcrafted Arts' or sumpin' akin to that? Of course, I realize that the word handcrafted or craft did not reach the level of fine art in many circles but I never or will never buy into that.

Since that is my catagory so to speak, being a 'craft-her', I like the craftyness of it all...

Now that my silliness is established with this reply, I say..."you go Girrrl!" and I will follow suit.
Freedom's just another word...

Thank you all for your input!

Mars - Yeah, my intention was to include Flash movies in the Film section so a better name was in order! Glad to hear you're working on those! Looking forward to seeing them and including them on the site. Thanks!

SooZ - a Handcrafted Arts section is a great idea!

-----------------------
After reviewing all of your comments, I've revised the list of sections for the site to this.... adding Uniting the Arts for links and website reviews ... which is our tagline and which is the whole idea of the site. Please let me know what you think of this list, OK? Any and all suggestions for revising this list would be appreciated as well as any additions to what each section could include.

Revised List - THE EIGHT + Uniting the Eight

1- Written Word - Poetry & Prose

2- Spoken Word - Audio Section

3- Visual Arts - Paintings, Drawings, Photography, Cartoons, etc.

4- Music - Audio Section w/lyrics

5- Performance Arts - incl. Theater & Dance & More (puppet shows, magic, etc )

6- Handcrafted Arts - incl. Jewelry, Sculpture, Puppetry

7- Film & Multimedia - incl. Flash movies

8- The Art of Commentary - Columnists & Philosophers

Uniting the Arts - Links to other art sites & reviews of other arts sites
