Chip shop

down to my last quid
a bag of chips will take the bite
off the cold winds

The woman behind the counter
her hands were covered in burn marks

it was her first day.

She also couldn’t wrap the chips up
properly

they were squashed

I didn’t expect to feel so much pain
just going into a chip shop.

Inside me
come inside
I may not let you in
or maybe slowly
or maybe you will keep me at the door
teasing by waiting
not quite all the way in
not quite touching the side of my walls
I want to pull you in deeper

I want to drag you to my shore
drowning times two
to drown with me
I will pull you in deeper
I will make you walk on water
you were made for my hands
you fall perfectly into my touch
water, sand sun one
you were made for my wombs
my womb
is my padded cell
I am
waiting for you to enter.

Love songs in taxis
love songs in taxis
ride to heaven
sitting in the backseat together
bodies becoming one
The driver pretends he doesn’t see
the radio is playing our song
Skin & bone disperses
There is only the music
and love being sung

Two years later

Love song in taxis
ride to hell
Sitting in the backseat
just one, body only one
The driver pretends he doesn’t see
the radio is playing our song
Skin and bone become stone
There is only the dying
and loneliness being won.

Saturday nights in Streatham

bile and flowers in litter bins
you never hear love songs
on Saturday night
Just the words, “I hate you, I hate you”
by those who have someone to love
The human animal needs alcohol
to be less painful
But it doesn’t seem to work
the broken glass on Sunday morning
pavements tell me that much at least.

Tears

A child & old man
tears so small, so heavy with light,
so heartbreaking
God lost the plot when a
child is able to cry

So a whole lifetime passes
and the old man cries
& God has still lost the plot

ROUGH PLACE RUIGOORD
for Henry Blunt & Co.

I have a friend
who calls it Serf City.
I see it otherwise, mind,
although I do get his drift.
For me it’s ‘a nice place to visit,
but I wouldn’t want to live there.’
(As a New Yorker I can say that!)
Too insular, too much in its own world.
I love the people, I groove on the scene.
Yet after so many hours, never mind days,
I feel that I am outside gazing in on a maze.
A most magical setting, utterly oozing with charm;
it captures your breath...then leaves you disarmed.
It burns with goddess flames, pure force of creation,
even as an undercurrent broods echoes of damnation.
I knew that years ago, once I’d made the acid punch
that had half the village laughing, singing, fire-dancing
in what seemed like a cartoon version of Naked Lunch:
Finch-eyed Simon always grabbing the ladle for “More!.”
The teenage girl who eventually agreed that “It works!.”
And me tripping in & out with fairies and elves galore.
A very special colony, even now, today,
but of a kind I prefer to imbibe in small doses.
Ruigoord, oh Ruigoord, may peace be upon you,
forever and e’er in the rugged outback of Amsterdam.

REFLECTIONS AND DIGRESSIONS ON A TUESDAY
I’ve never read great literature
I think
I’ve read a few books
Recommended
Some underground
Some over ground
Read till my eyes went round and round
Once read the phone bill
In Dutch
I was moved
It was impressive
I thought once is enough
I’ll remember this
I’ve listened to Beethoven
And like Mozart sonatas and have seen James Booker
Play piano in New Orleans
With his eye patch an’ crazed look
Somewhere between heaven and the gutter
Shared some class A stuff with him a few times
He was a hungry user
Died pitiful in a hospital waiting room
I’ve never seen one of those
Sappy poetic sunsets
You sometimes hear about from unpoetic people
But I threw up on the beach once
When I was a kid (that’s colorful !)
I’ve never seen a love story end happily
But I once kissed a girl I liked and
Went down on her in the movies

(She lost her knickers at the pause)
she said she’d like to fuck Juliet Binoche
and I did too
so I knew all things worked out equal
and not to worry anymore
I’ve never seen a supermodel naked
In the flesh or painted a museum
quality picture
In my fantasy I’ve buggered them all
And painted like Renoir
(It’s good to dream)
and I’ve still never seen anything
as beautiful as the day I woke up
and realized I didn’t need anything
to numb me or stimulate me
to face the day
(Life is Good)

New book “A good Idea at the time”
ISBN. 978-1-84753-210-7
Will be reviewed in the next newsletter.

You all keep asking for a poem from me
So here is one for you all

I awoke this morning
deep inside you
the
passing traffic
unaware of what
was happening
passed by
just meters away
from our bed
sheets wet
from what
had gone
before
in the
endless night
that had coiled
around our bodies
as we moved
in rhythms
that only
we
could
understand
